As The Walking Dead season 9 premiere approaches, Lauren Cohan reveals details about Maggie’s future in season 9 and beyond.

It’s no secret that Lauren Cohan is not long for The Walking Dead, but she’s not looking to cut ties with the show entirely. In a new interview on EW Radio Cohan talks about Maggie’s future on the show, from a truncated season 9 to a possible return in season 10 and beyond.

Cohan, in a possible kind-of-but-not-really spoiler, told EW that “Maggie’s story is open-ended.” Those five words offer an incredible amount of insight into Maggie’s future. While no one is certain about Andrew Lincoln’s future with the show and whether Rick Grimes will live or die, Cohan seems to be hinting that Maggie will not die in season 9 and she will have a chance to return in the future if a return makes sense.

A return will be based largely upon the success – or failure – of Whiskey Cavalier. Cohan’s new show Whiskey Cavalier has gotten a lot of buzz since the pilot was picked up at ABC in the spring. ABC spared no expense putting Cohan and co-star Scott Foley’s faces all over San Diego Comic-Con to promote the show, which premieres in 2019. In order to film her new show, Cohan will only appear in the first half of The Walking Dead’s ninth season, but she’s leaving the door open for the future.

It makes perfect sense that Cohan is leaving the door open for a return to The Walking Dead, even in a guest-starring capacity. No matter how strong a pilot is, new shows are a dime a dozen and it’s a wise move for Cohan to leave her options open in case the show doesn’t survive its freshman season.

The best part of this news is that it indicates that both AMC and ABC are willing to work with Cohan so that she can have a presence on both shows. This should give the TWD Family some breathing room as they head into season 9 knowing that Maggie’s story isn’t over yet.
