AMC renews Fear the Walking Dead for a fifth season and the news arrives at the perfect time as fans prepare for the second half of season 4.

With so many shows these days, there’s no guarantee that a show is going to stick around and that’s all the more reason that AMC’s announcement of a Fear the Walking Dead season 5 is such a good thing. The news arrives ahead of the show’s season 4 mid-season premiere on August 12, and the lure of season 5 will help everyone involved plan for the future.

With the back half of season 4 already planned out, the season 5 announcement allows showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg to plan for the future knowing that they have at least one more season to work with. In terms of storytelling, it’s a nice way to plan future plots without having to worry that the show won’t be renewed.

The renewal news is also a great thing for fans who hedge on whether or not to follow a show without knowing if it has a future. Many TV viewers wait for renewal information before investing in a show because it’s so hard to fall in love with a show only to have it cancelled.

Early renewals are a boon for television shows. There is nothing as frustrating for fans of a show than to find out that their favorite show ends its season with a massive cliffhanger, which is subsequently followed by news of the show’s cancellation.

It happens every spring, and it’s annoying. Take the case of FOX’s Lucifer, which ended on one of the biggest cliffhangers ever followed by news that the show was not coming back for a fourth season.

Showrunners had planned to continue their story into season 4, and they felt horrible that they left fans in such a lurch. Fortunately, the good folks at Netflix saved the show and Lucifer’s future is now bright. Even if Lucifer only has one season at Netflix, the showrunners can tell the stories they planned knowing that they have the opportunity to do so.

Lucifer’s story is an important one, though. Unless a show receives an early renewal ahead of the finale, or the showrunners are forced to choose between a season finale that leads into the following season, or they try to wrap everything up neatly in case the show isn’t renewed.

In the case of Fear the Walking Dead, showrunners now have a chance to end season 4 as they wish, either with a cliffhanger or with the promise of a new story leading into season 5 and that gives them room to plan for the story without having to worry about the show’s immediate future.

Fear the Walking Dead returns August 12, 2018.
