One of the biggest questions surrounding the world of The Walking Dead is what caused the zombie outbreak and the mystery might be solved…or not.

The Walking Dead showrunners get asked a lot of questions when they appear at panels and it’s not hard to imagine that some questions get old after being asked time and time again, which might explain why Gale Anne Hurd and Robert Kirkman finally put the kibosh on the biggest question of all: What caused the zombie outbreak?

The “answer” to the question came during The Walking Dead panel at San Diego Comic-Con when an eager fan asked Gale Anne Hurd to explain what went wrong. “The meth from Breaking Bad,” was her response, sending the audience into hysterics. Robert Kirkman chimed in with, “That’s canon, it’s confirmed.”

While this response is very much tongue in cheek, it works for a variety of reasons. On one hand, the cast of Breaking Bad (another hit AMC show) was scheduled for a 10th anniversary panel in Hall H that same day and many of the fans in The Walking Dead panel’s audience would be sticking around for it. On the other hand, though, there are conspiracy theorists out there who believe that Breaking Bad is tied to The Walking Dead and Hurd and Kirkman acknowledged their theory.

As it happens, there are lots of connections between Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, from Merle’s blue meth to Glenn’s Dodge Charger, and Gus Fring as a possible Zero Patient and early Walker.

Whether or not it’s true will remain a mystery, as Kirkman has no intention of exploring where and when and why the outbreak occurred. He’s more concerned with the aftermath and dealing with the consequences.
