If the promotional posters are any indication, Fear the Walking Dead is placing the focus squarely on Morgan Jones in the second half of season 4.

As soon as Lennie James crossed over to Fear the Walking Dead, bringing Morgan from the world of The Walking Dead to a whole new group of survivors, there was a lot of speculation about who would be the “lead” on the show. With Madison Clark gone it was anyone’s guess, but many fans believed that Alicia Clark would carry the mantle. However, Fear marketing is making it clear that Morgan is taking over.

Lennie James’ transition to The Walking Dead’s companion series naturally garnered a lot of attention. Though he’s the newest member of the cast, the showrunners see him as the one to lead the group into the next phase of the story. That’s evident in all of the promotional posters for the mid-season premiere.

Take a look:

With the two groups merged, there is a need for leadership and there is a problem of succession. There are two groups and both had their own leaders. Madison was the leader of one group while Morgan was reluctantly guiding his group (though he’d probably disagree if you asked him), which means that both groups have candidates for leadership and someone needs to come out on top.

There are two very important things to consider with this news: In terms of the story, it’s very possible that Alicia is still reeling from the loss of her mother and brother and that’s why she doesn’t step up to lead the group. And in real life, it’s important for fans to not take out their frustration on James. He’s not the one making the posters, or making the decisions, for that matter.

Time will tell how this all plays out on the show, and given the number of bait and switch plot twists we have seen, all of these posters might not mean anything.

Fear the Walking Dead returns August 12, 2018.
