Fear the Walking Dead: Will season 4B be brighter?
The first half of Fear the Walking Dead season 4 was split between the past and the present, with the present looking dingy. Will 4B be any brighter?
The dueling timelines in Fear the Walking Dead season 4A were distinguishable thanks to the use of color for the past while the present was filmed in monochromatic tones. Will the second half of season 4 continue to be dreary, or will the storm clouds eventually lift to match the brightness of the past?
The trailers and teasers ahead of the August 12 mid-season premiere make it look like the present storyline still appears as dull and dreary as it did in 4A. From a narrative standpoint this makes sense because even though the group has come together and is no longer fighting, they’re not out of the woods yet.

With a storm on the horizon and the threat of new people whose motivations are as-yet unknown, the future doesn’t look bright for the survivors. The dinginess of the present storyline in 4A reflected the hard times Strand, Luciana and Alicia had fallen upon, and this contrasted sharply with the bright promise of prosperity seen in the flashbacks. Morgan is still struggling with his demons while June tells someone on the walkie that “things are tough” so clearly nothing good is happening.
Clearly, season 4 is meant to be a transition. Not only does it move from one place to another but it advances the story along the timeline and establishes that this new group is going off in a whole new direction. The “on the move” feel to the season is reminiscent of the time period in The Walking Dead when the group was ousted from the prison and was looking for a new place to settle down.
Only time will tell if the second half of season 4 lightens up after the storm passes. If history is any indication, it’s not likely.
Be sure to catch the mid-season premiere on Sunday, August 12 at 9pm on AMC.
