The Good

This powerful episode would not have been possible without the work of the immensely talented Alycia Debnam-Carey and Alexa Nisenson. Both actresses had to brave challenging filming conditions, which would be difficult on the best of days, but they had to do it while filming some of the deepest and most emotional scenes we’ve seen in a long time. Alicia wrestled her desire for revenge and her desire to continue her mother’s legacy, while Charlie opened up about her past and admitted that while she doesn’t want to end up like her parents, she doesn’t want to die, either.

Alicia had a chance to kill Charlie twice, for two very different reasons. The first time she’s angry but she realizes that the gun wasn’t meant to kill her, and the other time she’s trying to kill Charlie in an act of mercy when it looks like they’re not going to make it. Both times she has every opportunity to pull the trigger but she just couldn’t do it.

At long last the audience has an understanding of where Charlie came from and what happened to her. Alexa Nisenson delivered an impactful performance in this episode, giving voice to Charlie and revealing the trauma she went through after a trip to the beach turned into an apocalyptic nightmare.

The storm has been a source of division between some fans who think it’s too much, but in this case it’s the perfect way to get these two characters together in one place. Throughout the episode Alicia was reminded of her mother and her mother’s legacy, and in the end it was her desire to do the right thing that prevailed. Alicia taking Charlie on a full sensory trip to the beach was like an olive branch between the two young women who have both lost a lot.
