Hanging Onto The Past And Humanity

Alicia has changed a lot from the high school girl she was from California. Do you think that it’s important for Alicia to hold onto who she used to be in going forward, or would it be better for her to focus on who she is now and forget about who she was in the past?

Sonya says:

"I think it’s critically important for her to hang onto that. Her humanity in the world now is going to be rooted in who she was back then, and what it was like to have Madison and Nick and Travis around her. She needs those memories of normality, comfort, and safety in order to hang onto what’s left of her humanity now."

Sarabeth says:

"Alicia was able to connect with Charlie because of her past. So there’s that aspect, that her past defines her. But we have to remember that Alicia’s past wasn’t all rainbows and unicorns. She resented how much her mother focused on Nick and how that forced her to spend most of her time taking care of herself. The independence from her childhood will be a big asset for her, but having bonded with her mother during the apocalypse it’s going to be hard to forget those new memories of life with her mother. That’s where she will struggle, and that’s the part that she will have to compartmentalize so that she can move forward and not dwell on the past."

Sara says:

"As much as it is important to always focus on the now and look towards the future, I think that it is also important that we don’t forget about our past. Our past makes the foundation for who we are now and I find that is extremely important in Alicia’s story. Alicia has come so far from the girl we first saw in California, to the killing machine that she is now. Alicia knows when it’s time to fight for her own good but I think she also uses her past to remind her of what is really important in the new world like she did with Charlie in this episode.  So I do think that while it is important for Alicia to focus on who she is now, it would be important for her to keep in mind who she was in the past to help guide her in the future."
