New images from The Walking Dead season 9 offer clues
AMC released new photos from The Walking Dead season 9 and they offer an intriguing look at how life has changed for Rick and the gang after All Out War.
With only a few weeks before the season 9 premiere of The Walking Dead, AMC has released several set photos that show the entire gang in action, minus one incarcerated villain.
The new photos feature the cast in different locations, and they’re all very interesting in terms of who appears with whom, and where the photos are taken.
The first photo is Melissa McBride and Khary Payton in a tender moment. They’re pressed together, gazing into each others’ eyes. Carol is smiling, a real smile, and Ezekiel is equally enthralled.
There are also solo images of Daryl, Michonne, Rosita and Father Gabriel. Father Gabriel’s photo is almost haunting, with his bad eye and his Poltergeist-inspired-Reverend-Kane hat.
The next photo features a group shot at the Sanctuary. Eugene, Carol, Ezekiel and Rick are there with some residents of the Sanctuary. It’s nighttime and it looks like Eugene might have some kind of role there given the papers in his hand.
Ezekiel and Jerry ride horses, while Maggie and her Hilltop residents stand together.
An image of Daryl, Rick and Michonne features an up-close look at Daryl’s new knives.
There are two images from the raid at the museum, where the group liberated an antique covered wagon.
In the final image, the group rides together down the road. Father Gabriel rides with Anne (formerly Jadis) in the wagon, Maggie and Siddiq riding together, Tara on horseback and Rick and Michonne riding out front. It’s unclear where they are going, but we’ve seen Michonne riding along with another group of people as well.
All of these images give us some insight into season 9. The use of covered wagons and horses reflects the fact that most cars have stopped working by this point. Maggie is clearly in charge of the Hilltop and she has loyal followers, and the image of Eugene at the Sanctuary suggests that he might be the one to step up and lead the community. It makes sense given that he was known to the people who lived there as someone who knew how to help make life better.
We’ll learn much more about what the photos mean when The Walking Dead returns on October 7 on AMC.
