If you’ve been watching Fear The Walking Dead for long enough, you know that a zombie apocalypse would be tough. To survive, you’ve got to be strong.

This week, I’m actually going to tackle two rules at once. One being that you need to realize just how tough a zombie apocalypse will be. The other being that in order to survive the apocalypse you need to be just as tough.

Let’s start with that first point. If you think a zombie apocalypse is going to be easy, or you’ll super badass your way through…man, you got a lot to learn.

For example: You don’t know everything that’s out there to get you.

Oh, sure, you know there are zombies — Duh, it’s a zombie apocalypse — but, you don’t where all of them are at any given time, or how many of them might be around you at a given time. You might think you’re only dealing with one or two, shoot them, and discover that a small army of them were in an abandoned safe zone only a few hundred yards away and are now all converging on you!

And, sure, you know there are hostiles, but, again, you don’t know where they are, and, more importantly, you don’t know who they are!

Okay, okay, maybe I’m not quite being fair, I mean, you do know that zombies and hostiles are out to get you, but one thing I’m pretty sure you don’t know: All the diseases, completely separate from the zombie virus, that could make you just as dead.

It’s kind of frightening to think about, but, all it takes is one bad batch of water to cut your legs (Or, more accurately, your gut) out from under you and stop your bid for survival dead in its tracks.

Throughout history, things like botulism, cholera, and dysentery, have caused thousands, sometimes millions of deaths, largely starting with people drinking contaminated water. Without water treatment plants once the apocalypse sets in, a disease like cholera, which is largely eradicated in North America and Europe, could easily make a comeback and claim you as ones of its victims, so, it wouldn’t hurt to boil your water, just in case…

Alright, now that we’ve covered some of how tough the zombie apocalypse will be, it’s time to go over how tough you’ll need to be to survive it.

First things first: There are no sick days in a zombie apocalypse. The dead won’t give a damn how miserable you feel, they will always come after you.

While this fact sucks, on the plus side, this means that there’s no question about what you should do: If you encounter a zombie, so long as you have the strength to move or to fight, you must use every ounce of that strength you have to fight said zombie. There ain’t no rest for the weary until the dead are gone. Never forget that.

Next, you need to have faith in yourself.

Now, this might sound cheesy at first, but, hear me out: You might not believe you have what it takes to survive a zombie apocalypse, but, you’d be amazed at what you can do when faced with no choice but to survive. People have an amazing amount of strength in them if they can just tap into it. You have an amazing amount of strength. You can be a survivor, if you’re careful and if you’re willing to fight for your life, but you need to believe that you can; Just like telling yourself you’ll super badass your way through the apocalypse, if you sit there telling yourself you can’t survive…you won’t.

Last, and certainly not least, you have to be stubborn and never give up. Whether that’s trying to find something or someone, or simply fighting to survive, no matter how tough things get, you can never give up.

Again, this might sound cheesy, but, remember, we’re talking about your life here, you only get one, and giving up in a zombie apocalypse means you die; Your goal is to survive, to outlast the dead. I can’t guarantee that you’ll survive, but, I can guarantee that if you give up, you definitely won’t.

No surprise, a zombie apocalypse will be tough, tougher than some people think. There will be threats out there you won’t expect, and some will so small that you won’t even be able to see them.

That said, no matter how bad things get for you, no matter how sick you may get, you can’t stop fighting the dead. So long as they know you’re around, regardless of your condition, they’ll keep coming, so you gotta be ready to fight them. You need to realize that while it won’t be easy, you do have the strength within you to survive, if you’re willing to fight to do it, and never giving up that fight. Survival sometimes comes down to our sheer stubbornness, our refusal to give up and die. Embrace that stubbornness. Never give up.

This is why you follow…The Rules.
