A zombie apocalypse, as we’ve seen in Fear The Walking Dead, would be awful. No matter how awful it is, though, you can’t quit. Survivors don’t quit.

If one was to assert that there was a theme to this week’s episode of Fear The Walking Dead, I’m inclined to think that theme was “Never give up”. If I’m correct in that assumption, then, that is a theme I can certainly get behind, because, to survive a zombie apocalypse, it’s a philosophy you need to adopt.

I know I touched upon this a little bit last week, but, considering how easy this week’s episode of Fear has made things for me, I figured this will be a perfect opportunity to really dive in.

First things first, as optimistic as I’d like to be, I’m not going to lie to you: There will be times in a zombie apocalypse where you’ll want to give up.

When the outbreak truly comes crashing down on all of us — When we first start seeing people we know become zombies, when they come to attack us, and when we see society tearing itself apart, when it needs coming together the most — times like that are when you’ll want to give up; When the world seems to be screaming at you to give up.

You can’t listen to it…not if you want to survive, anyway. You have to persevere, even if that takes all the strength of will you have to do it.

Speaking of which, if you need the help of someone else to find that strength to survive (However that help may come), that doesn’t make you weaker for needing it.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Humans are social animals. It’s in our nature to help one another; We’ve been doing it for around a million years.

Of course, sometimes helping people isn’t easy. There will be some people who you can’t reach, literally, and then, there will be some people who you can’t reach, figuratively: People who won’t want help, because they’ve convinced themselves that carrying on is impossible.

You can not give up on them. So long as you have the ability to help them, you have to try. Their survival (And maybe even your own) may be counting on it.

You also can’t give up on yourself; You can’t give up on trying to survive.

Like I said earlier, there will come times you’ll want to give up, for example: When you’ve tried to do something vital, only to be knocked back by something (The elements, the terrain, the dead, etc). No matter how difficult or insurmountable something might appear, so long as you’re still able to move, you can keep trying to overcome it, even if that means doing things in a different way than you thought.

Ultimately, your goal in a zombie apocalypse is to survive. It won’t be easy…I never said it would be. There will be times when everything is screaming at you to quit, but, you can’t listen to it. You have to shout down those voices that tell you to give up, to roll over, and die.

You have to fight on, even if you need help to do it, and keep fighting to survive, even if the apocalypse keeps trying to knock you down. Quitting is not an option in a zombie apocalypse. Quitting means death. Survivors don’t quit.
