Cover analysis of The Walking Dead comic issue 186: The Powder Keg
By Adam Carlson
The cover for issue 186 of The Walking Dead comic books should have readers very concerned about the future of The Commonwealth as well as Alexandria!
Relations between groups led by Rick Grimes and Pamela Milton are not looking so good as the leader of Alexandria has arrived at The Commonwealth just in time to see the city in the midst of a riot with people getting hurt and flames everywhere at the end of The Walking Dead issue 183.
However, the newly revealed cover for issue 186 titled “The Powder Keg” shows that the communities might not be in as much trouble as initially suspected, but the leadership of those groups may have plenty of cause for concern.
Take a look at the cover for the December 2018 issue of The Walking Dead comics as shared on the official Image Comics website:
The threat depicted in the cover for issue 186 is obvious. A gun is being pointed at Governor Milton and Rick is willing to step in front of her to take the bullet. Has Rick become close with Pamela? Or is this a natural response for him when he’s near someone in danger?
But more questions need to be asked as well. Who is this person aiming a gun at the leader of The Commonwealth? Why are they so upset with her that they are doing this? And is this an individual who is enraged enough to actually pull the trigger?
A good clue could be the hands themselves. The person holding the gun is showing good form, with a hand under the pistol for stability and some gloves to make it seem like this person is used to this kind of situation.
The hand could belong to Mercer, or possibly one of the soldiers who beat a man to death in the city streets of The Commonwealth.
There is also the Bill Sienkiewicz 15th anniversary cover for the issue featuring Negan, the former leader of The Saviors!
Issue 186 of The Walking Dead comics will be released on Dec. 5, 2018 and features the synopsis of “The powder keg: once it goes off, it can’t be contained.” Fans won’t want to miss this explosive issue when it is released!
