FearTWD, Survival Rule Of The Week: Beware of your surroundings
By Liam O'Leary
We saw a lot of people die in this week’s Fear The Walking Dead, so much so, I think we tackle how important it is to beware of what’s around you.
I’ve devoted the last couple of weeks (Maybe even the last month) to keeping a grip on your emotions and your will in a zombie apocalypse.
However, in light of just how many people died in this week’s episode of Fear The Walking Dead, I thought “You know what? It’s time for something a teensy bit more practical.”
This week, we’re going to tackle a relatively simple concept, but one that is extremely vital: The need to beware of your surroundings.
Let’s look at the poor truckers in the flashback during the beginning of this week’s episode for an example, shall we?
How many of those guys did Martha ambush? Four of them? That’s just poor. You can not let that happen to you in a zombie apocalypse, otherwise, well…you’ll end up like those truckers did: Dead.
How do you prevent such ambushes? Well, for starters, never assume you’re alone. Assuming things is bad to begin with, but, assuming you’re alone means you let your guard down, allowing any zombie or hostile to catch you by surprise!
Even if you’re not thinking about hostiles, remember that you’re in a zombie apocalypse: There are millions of zombies staggering around, and any one of them could easily stumble upon you and attack. Have some common sense, and always be on alert for them or anything else that might have hostile intent.
Now, should you run into a group of zombies too large for you fight, whatever you do, wherever you go, if at all possible, do not let the dead see where you’re going. If they do, unless you find something to distract them with, they will never stop chasing you, and your sanctuary will swiftly become your prison.
And, speaking of your sanctuary, if you have a choice of places to go, try to avoid going to hospitals. Though I imagine you know why, allow me explain for those who might not: While, yes, hospitals will have valuable medical supplies, they will almost certainly also have an overabundance of zombies, too.
Considering that a zombie apocalypse will likely manifest itself first as a mysterious illness, many of the first people infected will likely find themselves at hospitals and, when those infected inevitably turn, they’ll likely bite the very medical professionals trying to help them; Before long, anyone who hasn’t fled will become a zombie, meaning most hospitals will probably have dozens, maybe even hundreds of zombies in or around them; Not the ideal place to try to find safety.
While we’re at it, if you can, just avoid very tall buildings altogether.
Even if they’re not a building overrun by the dead, if they’ve still seen you, they’ll still chase you and surround the building.
Sure, you can go up, but…then what? You still need to get back to the ground to escape, right? Especially if they break in to the building, how are you going to get back down? How are you going to get out? The higher you go up in a building, the more of deathtrap that building is going to become.
Now, some of you might be thinking of using the building’s elevators, and, yes, you can use them to return to the ground.
However, I have a problem with elevators in a zombie apocalypse: You can NOT see what’s waiting for you, either in the elevator or out of it. For all you know, there could be a dozen zombies waiting for you in the elevator, and hundreds waiting for you outside of it! In either case, once those doors open, you’re going to get ambushed, pure and simple!
If you have no other choice, then, use the damned elevator, but, if you’ve got a better option, one where you can actually see what might be waiting for you on the next floor, take it!
There’s lots of things you can do to ensure your survival — Training, preparation, etc. — but, one of the easiest things you can do is beware of your surroundings.
If things seem too quiet, get out of there. If a building you go to seems like it could be a deathtrap, so long as you have the option to, get out of there. If a situation seems like it could become excessively dangerous, if you have the option to, get out of it. Never assume you’re alone. Never assume you’re safe. A zombie apocalypse will be a dangerous world, and you need to be alert and observant to survive it.
This is why you follow…The Rules.
And that’s our survival rule of the week!! Hopefully, it’ll help you give you that mental edge that will prove so crucial once the dead start eating everyone.
