The Walking Dead is back for season 9 and we start out 18 months in the future, and everything feels fresh and new already. Here’s your recap of “A New Beginning.”

The season premiere of The Walking Dead begins with a shot of the construction going on in Alexandria. There are crops, a lake, solar panels and windmills. Rick opens the door to find Michonne and Judith painting on the patio. She’s talking, and she’s telling Michonne how she’s drawing a picture of the whole group, including “Daddy’s big tummy.”

The trio goes out into a field and sees the crows flying in formation.

The crows are a different scene at the Sanctuary, where the crops are dead. Eugene is inside and he’s trying to make something. Daryl is there reading a book on motorcycle repair in what looks to be a garage. One of the residents comes to get him and together they go to the crops, where two people are tying a walker to a pole to be the new scarecrow. Daryl shoots it in the head.

Eugene radios to Tara, who calls him “Ponytail” (great new name!) and reports that she can still hear his signal. He says it’s time to go medieval. She calls ahead to Jesus to relay the message forward. He’s there with Aaron killing walkers, and Aaron wants to learn to kill walkers the Jesus way. Aaron can audit the children’s class that Jesus teaches, Jesus says. They call ahead on the radio.

Daryl’s on the motorcycle, once again whole with his vest, crossbow and bike. He passes Jerry, who is on a horse, and Jerry says he’ll see Daryl at the rally point.

In the nearby town, the walkers hear horses coming and get up to find the noise. Little do they realize, Rick and Michonne wanted them up so they can ride through and take them out. Ezekiel is also there, with Father Gabriel, Enid, Maggie and Carol. Even Cyndie is there. Everyone is there and ready.

The credits are brand new this season, with more of a comic-inspired feel.
