Season 9 episode 1 of The Walking Dead had a lot happening but one character went above and beyond to be the Most Valuable Person from “A New Beginning”.

The world of The Walking Dead felt a little different in season 9 now that the conflict against The Saviors came to a conclusion when All-Out War against The Saviors ended with Rick and the survivors emerging victorious.

At a time when there should be peace, there is just as much conflict as ever. Struggles between the communities as well as within them kicked off the ninth season in a big way, and with that plenty of drama and intrigue.

Still, there had to be an MVP from the season 9 premiere of The Walking Dead and while there were some great options, one individual had to be chosen as the Most Valuable Person.

THE MVP FROM TWD 901 IS MAGGIE!

There are plenty of people who could have been the MVP, but Maggie’s devotion to herself and her people at The Hilltop earned her the award!

Maggie has grown tired of growing a majority of the food for everyone at The Sanctuary and getting nothing in return. Her people questioned why she was helping Negan’s people at all. Finally, she made a firm stand that they wouldn’t be sending anything until they got something in return: fuel.

Maggie still is upset with Rick. Ever since the season 7 premiere when Rick did nothing while Glenn’s brains were bashed in by Negan, she has been plotting ways to kill him. When Rick spared the leader of The Saviors during All-Out War, Maggie vowed to change the way things happen…and definitely wasn’t afraid to be vocal about change being needed.

Also, when Gregory took advantage of a grieving couple who just lost their son to manipulate Earl into attacking Maggie, she saw right through his plan and confronted him, even thwarting an assassination attempt.

At this point, she realized Gregory was too dangerous to keep alive. She ordered that he be hanged in front of everyone at The Hilltop to be an example…which is the exact opposite of how Rick handled thing with Negan at the end of All-Out War.

Maggie’s conflict with Rick is definitely going to be something that will divide the survivors and perhaps the communities. It will make for an interesting story as season 9 goes on, especially since these two individuals have been around for many seasons and are both fan favorites.

Other options for MVP:

  • “The Famous” Rick Grimes for his great relationship with Michonne as well as trying to be a liaison between the communities to promote togetherness
  • Carol for working to save Ezekiel at the museum plus getting the question popped to her!
