The Walking Dead returns with a story of conflict, relationships and a farewell to arms. Here’s your recap of episode 902, “The Bridge.”

“The Bridge” starts out with Rick settling down in a dark place. He admits it has been a while since they’ve talked and even though it’s a one-sided conversation, he’s still there and he has a lot to talk about. This is the first time in The Walking Dead season 9 that Rick has met with Negan, who is locked up in Alexandria.

We see Day 35 as the camp takes shape. Rick is in the forest with a group of tents. They’re building and growing. We see Tara and Anne, Jerry and Nabila, and the residents of Oceanside. One of the road signs points toward “The Future.” Rick says they’re building and they’re focused on making a new beginning. In the distance, a new bridge is taking shape.

The workers’ village is busy. Ezekiel gets Henry ready and tells him that he’ll someday tell his grandchildren about this road. Roads lead to civilization and trade. Henry sees it as boring but it will be the future. He runs off to play when Carol walks up and asks if he forgot something. Henry runs back to kiss her but she was actually talking about his weapon. Ezekiel says Henry will be off to college before they know it and he shares a bittersweet vision of what that would look like. Carol says that the Sanctuary still needs her, and they share a kiss. He’s willing to wait for her.

Eugene reports on the levies upstream. He thinks they can work around any potential problems. Rosita says that there is a herd of walkers a few miles off but if they don’t blast now then it could lead to the other herd closeby getting closer. Eugene notes that they have lost several members of the Savior workforce and he’s concerned. Rick tells him to talk to Carol about it.

Enid is stitching up Cyndie’s hand after she cut it with a potato peeler. Siddiq watches her closely and when Rick approaches he praises his “star student.” Rick wants Siddiq to return home because a bug is going around Alexandria, and Enid can be the camp’s doctor in his place. Enid is nervous but decides she’s got it.

Eugene is concerned about the slim pickings of the supplies at the Sanctuary. The crops aren’t growing and the residents are getting anxious. Rick assures him that Michonne is on it.

At the Hilltop Maggie is helping work with a horse when Michonne arrives. She tells Maggie that the Sanctuary sent the ethanol shipment last week but it never arrived. Michonne is hoping that the Hilltop will spare some supplies and Jesus mentioned their surplus. Maggie is worried about giving out food because she doesn’t have a plow. They need a blacksmith and hers is locked up for now. Michonne asks how long he’ll be locked up and Maggie, who is new to all of this, isn’t sure. Michonne sneaks in a jab about how fast Maggie hanged Gregory and suggests that they need some rules. Maggie isn’t pleased, but she offers Michonne a place to stay for the night.
