The Walking Dead 905 is officially Rick Grimes’ last episode
AMC and The Walking Dead confirmed what fans have long suspected: Episode 905 will be Rick Grimes’ finale episode on the series.
As soon as The Walking Dead episode “Warning Signs” aired fans were put on notice that there are only two more episodes featuring Rick Grimes remaining. That means that Andrew Lincoln’s finale episode will indeed be episode 905, appropriately titled “What Comes After.”
It’s hard to envision The Walking Dead without Rick Grimes, but season 9 has shown us that there are other incredibly interesting stories out there that deserve some attention. And since we don’t know for sure that Rick will be killed off, there’s always hope for a return at some point in the future. (Unless he is killed off, in which case there will be no hope of a return)
There are some great theories out there about how Rick Grimes will leave the show, and “Warning Signs” certainly supports the idea that Rick will have an open-ended departure. The prevailing theory is tied to Anne (Jadis) and the helicopter.

Lots of fans on social media lamented the confirmation that “What Comes After” will be Rick’s final episode, saying that it has been “spoiled” now, but the truth is that as soon as news of Andrew Lincoln’s departure leaked there was no more guarding the secret. The only thing that can be protected at this point is how Rick Grimes exits the show, in which case AMC is smart to market the heck out of the final episode. (If for no other reason than to boost ratings, which have been lower than previous seasons even though the show still dominates Sunday ratings)
What it all boils down to as fans wait for “What Comes After” is whether Rick will be killed off, or will something else happen that allows him to stay alive? If Rick can somehow avoid being killed then it opens the door for a possible return in the future, which would be welcome news.
The idea of Rick Grimes leaving the show is hard to swallow given that the entire story revolves around Rick Grimes. With Carl dead, The Walking Dead will undergo a dramatic change from its comic book source material and that will definitely take the story in a new direction. It doesn’t help knowing that Rick and Michonne are trying to have a baby, either.
While the ratings have suffered in season 9, the response to the new season has been overwhelmingly positive from the fans who are tuning in. With the confirmation that there are two Rick Grimes episodes remaining, the countdown begins.
