The Walking Dead’s third episode of season 9 “Warning Signs” had almost exactly the same gain as the previous episode.

The Walking Dead is staying consistent where it counts in the ratings. Live views are no longer an accurate measure of the views that a show gets thanks to huge drops in cable subscriptions and the popularity of DVR and streaming media which gives fans other ways to watch the show.

But the third episode of the season “Warning Signs” which had that shocking reveal that it was the Oceanside ladies killing The Saviors had almost exactly the same extended view numbers as the previous episode, “The Bridge”.

“Warning Signs” had slightly more live viewers than “The Bridge” with just over 5 million views. But in Live+3 extended ratings it picked up 2.3 million additional views for a total of 7.4 million views combined views. Not surprisingly it was once again the number one cable drama on Sunday night by millions of views.

The consistency of the pickup in views means that a large number of fans are choosing to watch the show in the three days after it airs rather than watching it live on Sunday nights. What it doesn’t mean is that the show’s numbers are drastically falling, as some outlets are saying. The Walking Dead’s ratings are still the highest of any cable TV drama and no other cable show can even come close to The Walking Dead’s ratings.

Saying Goodbye To Rick Grimes

While extended views for the fourth episode of The Walking Dead this season, “The Obliged” aren’t in yet the most recent episode garnered 5.1 million live views which is the highest number of live shows the show has had since the season 9 premiere.

With fans getting ready to say goodbye to Andrew Lincoln and Rick Grimes in episode 905 this Sunday it’s a safe bet that the extended views for “The Obliged” and the live views for Sunday’s episode “What Comes After” will be high.

And what does come after? Will the show be able to hang onto the kind of views that have kept it the number one cable drama for all these years without Rick Grimes? There’s no reason why it shouldn’t. Fans and critics are thrilled with the changes that new showrunner Angela Kang has brought to the show and the show’s ratings may dip a little after Rick’s departure but should even out again quickly.
