Carl Grimes

The driving force of Rick throughout the entire series. Everything that Rick has done has been for Carl. The moment he woke up in the hospital, Rick made it his mission to find Carl. They went through every trial and tribulation together, including the death of Lori, which radically altered their relationship. Every single time Carl was in danger, Rick was there to fight back and make things safer for his son. That changed when Carl met his end in season 8, and Rick was forced to face life without the son he vowed to protect. Even now, Rick is working to builda future that Carl was supposed to be part of.

Carol Peletier

Rick may be our main protagonist, but that doesn’t mean he is the singular hero of the story. Carol is the protector of the group and she has saved Rick’s life on multiple occasions. Upon arriving at the Atlanta camp, Rick met a meek and mild woman who did his laundry. Over the course of eight seasons, he has been able to see Carol come into her own and recognize the strength within herself. While he may have banished her back in season 4, Rick came to realize that Carol is needed for the group to survive. Rick is able to confide in her and vice versa. This is a prime example of two characters growing together and evolving an unbreakable bond in the process.
