Nine seasons is a long time for any show, but new showrunner Angela Kang hit the refresh button on The Walking Dead to give fans the show they deserve.

The entirety of season 9 thus far has proved beyond a doubt that The Walking Dead is back with a vengeance and it’s the same gritty and gut-wrenching zombie show it was back in its heyday. Season 9 has given us The Walking Dead we all deserve.

It’s a brave new world on The Walking Dead. Six years have passed and the world has changed. The future is not what fans might expect, and episode 906 will show that times have changed both for the good and the bad. Leading up to episode 906, the show has given fans powerful episodes that hark back to season 1 and 2.

Lots of fans wondered whether the show would be able to weather the departure of Andrew Lincoln, and “Who Are You Now” definitely makes a case for a strong show in the post-Rick Grimes world. When fans see episode 906 it will become clear that the rest of the cast has a chance to shine in a way they haven’t been able to in the past. The episode is a throwback to the early days when the show was focused on the group dynamic more than individual characters, and that’s a great thing.

There’s no denying that it has been a rough road for the TWD Family over the past few seasons, and it’s important to acknowledge that the show struggled in season 7 and 8 with the buildup to and fallout from All Out War. We all have our preferences and for some members of the TWD Family the All Out War storyline wasn’t their cup of tea. That’s totally fine. It was two seasons of fighting, tension and tragic deaths and even though most of the story fell under comic book canon, it felt like a deviation from previous seasons of the show. (It’s equally important to acknowledge that some fans liked seasons 7 and 8, myself included, and that’s ok too)

The past is now behind us. Season 9 is here and it has declared loudly and in no uncertain terms that The Walking Dead is back to being the juggernaut it has always been. The writing is tight, strong and decisive. Every episode of season 9 has been intense, with the first four episodes building up to the departure of Rick Grimes in episode 5 and then moving into uncharted territory in episode 6 and beyond.

If you haven’t been watching, The Walking Dead has returned to the same vibe it had during earlier seasons. Season 9 has been a breath of fresh air and for the fans who weren’t fond of season 7 and 8 it has been the show fans deserve coming out of two years of fighting and tragic death.

Now is a great time to return to the show because if you haven’t been watching or have been worried about the show post-Carl, and now post-Rick, you just might be surprised by how good it is.

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9pm on AMC.
