Beth Greene
The sisterhood between Maggie and Beth is one of love, but also devastation. When the Greene family is first introduced in season 2, viewers became aware that they are keeping their undead family and friends in their barn. When Shane prompts the slaughter of these walkers, Maggie is forced to face the reality of this post-apocalyptic world as Beth attempts suicide due to her grief and hopelessness. Maggie is extremely protective of her younger sister, but as the series progresses, Beth becomes able to protect herself and Maggie no longer has to worry about her constantly.
When their father was bitten by a walker at the start of season 3, their roles reversed and Beth became the source of optimism in the family whilst Maggie prepared for the worst. On that fatal day when The Governor decapitated Hershel, Maggie lost not only her father, but also her sister as this was the final time she would ever see her alive. One season later, Maggie’s world came crashing down when she watched as Daryl carried Beth’s lifeless body out of Grady Memorial Hospital, just moments after receiving the good news that her sister was alive. There’s really no happy ending with the Greene sisters and this tragic arc serves as further fuel for the Maggie we see today.

Deanna Monroe
Maggie was always destined for greatness. Deanna saw that when the group arrived at the Alexandria Safe-Zone in season 5. When assigning the new arrivals jobs in the community, Deanna seemed to have noticed leadership qualities in Maggie and made her her assistant to help plan for the future and work on expanding Alexandria. It was in this position of power, that Maggie was able to advocate for her people to be trusted due to their experience outside of the walls.
Just because they worked together, doesn’t mean Maggie and Deanna saw eye-to-eye on everything. After Father Gabriel betrayed the group and Rick pulled a gun on the Alexandrians, Maggie was placed in an awkward position and had to stand up to Deanna in defense of Rick. As Deanna experienced the losses of her son and husband, it was Maggie who did her best to keep the downtrodden leader focused on the goal of making Alexandria a thriving community for the future. Years later, and with Maggie and Deanna gone, their vision for what the walled sanctuary could become is now reality.
