The Walking Dead: The most important people in Maggie Rhee’s life
By Jeffrey Kopp
Sasha Williams
Before the apocalypse, only a handful of the characters knew each other, but bonds are forged over shared tragedy. Maggie and Sasha are an excellent example of this. Their first real interaction came on one of the darkest days of Maggie’s life as she fought her way out of the Prison with Sasha and Bob. From there, they disagreed on their next course of action with Maggie choosing to take a more optimistic approach while Sasha thought all was lost. They really learned to care for one another on the road to Terminus, but they really bonded most after the deaths of Beth and Tyreese. Their conversation in the wreckage of a tornado in episode 510 really solidified their determination to keep moving forward together even after experiencing painstaking losses.
The morning after Negan brutally murdered Glenn and Abraham, it was Sasha that rose up from the ashes and became an emotional soldier for Maggie. The two moved to the Hilltop and used their shared grief to build a future; they ultimately took two separate approaches with Maggie working on fortifying the Hilltop while Sasha prepared to end Negan once and for all. When Sasha made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the group, it was Maggie who was there to tearfully put an end to her reanimated friend. Sasha helped Maggie get back on her feet after death, and their shared trauma made Maggie see that she wasn’t alone in this world.
Tara Chambler
Enemies can become friends. When Tara was aligned with The Governor, she was a rallying voice to take over the Prison. She soon realized the error of her ways and made it her mission in life to reunite Glenn with Maggie to assure that something good would come out of the destruction she had a hand in. Tara’s history is something she was ashamed of until Maggie showed her forgiveness and made it clear that Tara was a member of the family.
Sadly, their friendship has been left to the wayside in the more recent seasons and they haven’t had many opportunities to interact on screen. Still, Maggie herself told Tara just how significant their friendship is, stating “we were on different sides of the fence on the worst day of my life, and now you’re one of the most important people in the world to me.” Even though it isn’t always shown, this is one bond that teaches us the importance of change and forgiveness.
