Aaron and Jesus reach a fence. The herd is still bearing down on them. The dense fog makes it almost impossible to see anything, but you can hear them coming. They jump through a hole in the fence, looking for a gate, and the herd follows. They’re running out of time. Aaron and Jesus get their weapons ready and start bracing for a fight.

When the walkers come at them, Jesus and Aaron move like a well-oiled machine to keep them away. It’s a stunning scene to watch because the sound of the walkers is coming from all around them but there is zero visibility.

Michonne shows up and tries to open the gate with Eugene. Magna and her people are right behind her, and Magna says they’re earning their keep. Jesus sends Aaron to help with the gate while he holds off the walkers.

The next sequence is one of the most visually stunning sequences in all of The Walking Dead. Jesus, being the skilled fighter that he is, starts fighting the walkers Matrix style, with hints of martial arts mixed in. He pivots and jumps, and the shots slow down as he lands the fatal blows. Aaron calls for him and he turns to join them, slashing at the remaining walkers. As he moves to strike one down, the walker grabs him and stabs him in his side, driving the knife up into his chest. “You are not where you belong,” the walker says.

Aaron screams and rushes back to the fight with Michonne on his heels. More walkers with weapons rush in and Daryl and Magna’s people take them out. Aaron kneels beside Jesus and weeps.

Daryl calls Michonne over and shows her the dead walker. She can’t understand what these walkers are. Daryl looks at its head and sees stitches. He cuts them open to reveal that they were wearing walker masks.

Whispered words start ringing out among the guttural walker sounds. “They’re trapped.” “Circle around.” “Keep them together.”

The group realizes that they’re now surrounded in the foggy darkness by a very new and very dangerous threat.

And that’s that.

The Walking Dead returns in 2019.
