Overall impression of TWD 908

Before diving in too deep, let’s talk about one quick thing. This episode was absolutely beautiful. The contrast of the lush grass, leaves, and trees against the dark of night with the fog was absolutely breathtaking. Also, the darkness and light in the cell with Negan was another great contrast that added to the scenes. This episode was bleak, yet lovely.

Now into the episode content.

Losing Jesus is absolutely horrible. He was one of the brightest spots on the show with his positive nature and excellent fighting skills. However, the way his fight was used to make the big reveal of The Whisperers was amazing and frightening in a way that fans haven’t seen on the show in a long, long time.

Weirdly, the B story of Henry messing up by sneaking out and drinking is the kind of characterization the story needs, along with Magna’s group attempting to fit in and “earn their keep” in a community. These side plots were nice departures from the action and intensity of the scene with the walkers…and The Whisperers.

There are still a ton of questions that need to be answered. What divided the communities? What are the X’s on the backs of some of the survivors? And is Tara going to be the new leader of The Hilltop? Those questions make the second half of season 9 something fans won’t want to miss!

This season has made the departure from the comics even further than it was. But that’s not a bad thing since having unique stories and different characters can create some instances where fans get something fresh and interesting in place of direct adaptations.

EPISODE GRADE: 9.3/10
