11. Lizzie Samuels

Introduction: Lizzie Samuels believed walkers were still people in some way, similar to Hershel who thought they were sick, and the Governor who thought part of them remained intact. She named walkers over the prison fence and would feed them rats. Eventually, Lizzie would try playing with one, thinking it wouldn’t hurt her as it was a friend. She believed she could communicate with the walkers in some form.

Lizzie suffered from emotional problems from an early age, usually told to look at flowers by her sister to calm her down. In the chaotic world of The Walking Dead, it’s not surprising that her instability caused her to not be able to tell the difference between living people and the dead.

Biggest moment of Villainy: Lizzie kills her sister Mika by stabbing her repeatedly and plans to do the same to Judith to prove to Carol and Tyreese that when they return as walkers, they’ll remain as before (as no damage was done to the brain). Carol and Tyreese arrive in time to stop her from killing Judith but it’s too late for her sister Mika.

Everybody Hurts Sometimes: Lizzie cries hard when she thinks Carol is mad at her. Carol tells her to “look at the flowers” before breaking out in tears and shooting her in the back of the head.

The Good Side: In her mind, Lizzie was just trying to prove she was right, as most youngsters do. In this case, there were real life-and-death implications to Lizzie testing her hypothesis. She was not “evil” per say…although she did once almost suffocate baby Judith because the crying annoyed her. She wasn’t quite right.

First Appearance: “30 Days Without An Accident” (season 4, episode 1)

Last Appearance: Living – “The Grove” (season 6, episode 14), Hallucination scene in “What Comes After” (season 9, episode 5)

Cause of Death: Lizzie Samuels is shot in the back of the head by Carol, akin to being put down after she’s deemed to be too much of a danger to others.

Memorable Quote: “You’re mad at me. Please, don’t be mad at me. I’m sorry!” (To Carol)
“Look at the flowers, Lizzie” (Carol attempting to calm down Lizzie before shooting her)
