24) Richard (Kingdom)

Introduction: Richard was an elite solider of the Kingdom who wished to break the hold the Saviors owned over the community, mostly to redeem himself. He had ignored community affairs when his wife and daughter were still alive and paid the ultimate price for his passivity, or at least that’s how he sees it.

Savior Gavin, who led a small collecting group on behalf of Negan, would have a certain distaste for Richard’s disgust every time they met, and informed him he’d be the first one to go if anything went wrong in their one-sided trade.

Biggest moment of Villainy: Richard intentionally held back a cantaloupe during the next ‘trade’ with the Saviors, hoping to get a reaction from them. He thought he’d be the only one to die, perishing as a martyr to the rest of the Kingdom and the other communities could rally around, instigating a war with the Saviors.

However, Savior Jared had other plans and instead of shooting Richard as promised, shot Benjamin in the thigh instead, which led to his death. While Richard later laments Benjamin’s death, he still sees it as a worthy one if it meant the Kingdom went to war against the Saviors.

Everybody Hurts Sometimes: Richard says “It was supposed to be me” and had actually dug a grave for himself. He wanted to die by the Saviors’ hand and ‘reunite’ with his family.

The Good Side: Richard’s miscalculation cost a life other than his own. However, his intentions were well-met. Richard simply decided to take a risk on his own accord with no communication with other Kingdom members, not imagining the consequences.

First Appearance: “The Well” (season 7, episode 2)

Last Appearance: “Bury Me Here” (season 7, episode 13)

Cause of Death: Death by strangling and having his head slammed into the ground repeatedly from unexpected Morgan outburst of rage during Savior trade meeting.
