5. Merle Dixon

Introduction: Merle was one of the most charismatic antagonists on the show, more of a mercenary than a true by-the-books villain. Daryl Dixon’s older brother was strong, resilient, an expert tracker and always adaptable. He brutally beat T-Dog, tortured Glenn, and followed the Governor’s ruthless orders almost to the letter…until it didn’t suit him, like when Michonne was able to escape. Gargulio said he would tell the Governor, and argued with Merle about going back to Woodbury, leading to him being shot in the head.

Biggest moment of Villainy: Merle’s most memorable act is in the second episode of The Walking Dead, when Merle beats T-Dog almost to death, pointing a gun at his face after winning a fist fight, then telling the others to vote for him as leader. Merle is able to fight off all others on his own, showing his advanced combat skills and is only stopped when hit from behind by Rick.

Everybody Hurts Sometimes: Merle never shows weakness and seems content to be seen as “the bad guy” if it means Daryl is spared the image. Daryl, however, is clearly in a lot of pain when he see his brother as a walker post-death.

The Good Side: Merle is loyal without question to his “baby brother,” and willing to do anything to find him throughout the series, and anything to protect him afterwards. He loves his brother Daryl and when he sees Daryl believes in Rick, he joins Rick’s group mostly to watch over Daryl. Merle sacrifices his own life in an attempt to take down the Governor later on.

First Appearance: “Guts” (season 1, episode 2)

Last Appearance: “This Sorrowful Life” (season 3, episode 15)

Cause of Death: In an ambush mission without backup, Merle Dixon ends up taking a gunshot to the chest from the Governor after one-on-one combat. Merle was the first original character to perish on The Walking Dead.

Memorable Quote: “You need to grow up. Things are different now. People do what they gotta do or they die.” (To Daryl)
