17) Mary (Terminus)

Introduction: Gareth’s mother was the first to greet Rick’s group (and many others) with a helping of meat as they arrived in Terminus, only to be captured and become ‘what’s for dinner’ themselves!

Biggest moment of Villainy: After the prison collapses, Rick and others are attracted to the appeal of a safe haven sanctuary over at Terminus. When they arrive, they think they’ve made it, as Mary, a seemingly nice lady, greets them at the entrance. But they’re betrayed within minutes as Rick spots a familiar watch in the possession of Mary’s son Alex. It’s Glenn’s pocket watch, given to him by Hershel.

Everybody Hurts Sometimes: Mary tells Carol in her last moments what happened to her, how she and the others were brutalized and she was exploited by the men that once took over Terminus. Terminus used to be the place they advertised until they realized something: “You’re the butcher… or you’re the cattle.”

The Good Side: Terminus was once led by Mary and her two sons to help others; they didn’t turn into cannibals overnight. It happened after they took back Terminus for themselves after being locked in a boxcar by another group who had taken over the settlement.

First Appearance: “Us” (season 4, episode 15)

Last Appearance: “No Sanctuary” (season 5, episode 1)

Cause of Death: Death by Walkers after Carol leaves her to fend for herself after shooting her in the leg.

Memorable Quote: “You’re the butcher… or you’re the cattle.” (To Carol)
