The Walking Dead mid-season finale revealed how Negan gets out of the jail cell, but the big question is what happens now that he’s free.

In the middle of the Whisperer terror on the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead there was a surprising moment when former Savior leader Negan discovered that his jail cell had been left unlocked. He’s now free…but what will he do next?

Negan spent the entirety of the front end of season 9 locked up. We saw cocky Negan, confident Negan, utterly broken Negan and now we’re seeing free Negan. With the Saviors dead and gone, and the Sanctuary out of commission (though we don’t know what happened), Negan has some choices to make.

Like Schrodinger’s Cat, Negan could go either way at this point. He could go back to being Old Negan and be the villain once again, or he could change. Or he could be a bit of both.

Negan has a choice to make. Michonne and Aaron are away from Alexandria and a new threat is looming over all of the communities. Does Negan go back to his old ways, or does he try something different? Has he learned anything after being locked up for so long?
