The Walking Dead 908: Earning their keep
When Michonne ran into trouble during the season 9 mid-season finale of The Walking Dead, she got a major assist from a surprising source.
When push came to shove on the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead, Magna and Yumiko rushed in to help Michonne, proving beyond a doubt that they’re willing to “earn their keep” even when Michonne keeps trying to push them away.
From the moment Michonne met Magna and her group she was cold and rude to the newcomers, whose only offense was that they showed up in Alexandria after being welcomed by Judith. Michonne’s plan was to dump them off at Hilltop as a happy medium: She would be honoring Judith’s wishes to keep them safe, and she wouldn’t have to break her own rules about new people in the community.
Upon arriving at the Hilltop, Magna’s group was met with a much warmer welcome as Tara told them they’d have to earn their keep but could stay. The group knew something big happened between these communities, realizing that if they’d arrived earlier they wouldn’t be treated to Michonne’s cold shoulder.
However, when it came down to saving Aaron, Daryl, Jesus and Eugene, Michonne was shocked to see Magna and Yumiko swoop in to help with the rescue mission. At this point Magna’s group had only met Aaron, but the fact that they didn’t know the rest of the missing community members didn’t stop them from going to help.
When Michonne sees them she asks what they’re doing, and Magna replies “Earning our keep.” Magna is sending a message here, that despite a less than welcoming welcome her group is willing to fight to help people in need no matter what. Whatever happened during the time jump made it so that Michonne doesn’t trust anyone, and Magna certainly has trust issues of her own. This selfless act of going into battle for complete strangers sends a very powerful message.
At the end of the mid-season finale things didn’t look good for the group as they found themselves surrounded by Whisperers. Knowing that she has some powerful new allies, and perhaps friends, must make Michonne feel a bit better now that she’s faced with a new threat. More than anything, though, it proves that Magna’s group is worth trusting and worth allowing into the fold.
