10. Hershel Saves The Sick In The Prison
Season 4, “Internment”
When illness swept through the prison, it was an enemy that the group didn’t know how to fight. But that wasn’t about to stop Hershel from trying. Using a combination of herbal medicine and sheer determination, Hershel locked himself into the cell block with the sick and tried to keep as many people alive as he could. He also quietly removed anyone that died and put them down so that the rest of the cell block, especially the children, couldn’t see the process.
Hershel worked tirelessly, but the constant physical struggle to care for the sick as well as the emotional toll it took to see so many he people he cared about like Glenn and Sasha suffering wore him down. After the only doctor they had died from the flu, Hershel was alone trying to save a huge chunk of the prison population. Waiting for Daryl and the small group to bring the meds from the veterinary school, he went from cell to cell trying to keep everyone alive.
That’s heroic just by itself. But when Lizzie leads a walker away from one of the cells and trips, making her a sitting target for the walker, Hershel found a Herculean strength and managed to save her from the walker. Hershel was a fighter until the end and he would have done anything to save the people he cared about.
“Internment” was an episode that really let Hershel’s character shine in terrible circumstances. Hershel’s legacy of heroism and humanity is still evident in the survivors who knew him today, although the number of characters that are still alive that knew Hershel is dwindling every year.
