8. Jesus Vs. The Whisperers

Season 9, “Evolution”

When Jesus and Daryl set out from The Hilltop to find Eugene after Rosita let them know that Eugene was out on his and in trouble, they had no idea what they were heading into. They thought that they were just going to find Eugene and help him get away from a herd of walkers. But the walkers that Eugene was running from weren’t walkers. They were The Whisperers. The Whisperers wear the skins of walkers so that they can move among the herds but they are human, and even more dangerous than the walkers.

Daryl first noticed that something was off when he tried to distract the herd so that Jesus and Aaron could get Eugene to safety and the herd wouldn’t move. They stayed on course hunting the humans instead of following the distraction.

After Michonne, Magna, and Yumiko managed to get Eugene out of the graveyard, Jesus told Aaron to go too and that he would finish killing the rest of the walkers. He killed many of them, but as he headed towards the others who were gathered outside the fence waiting for him a Whisperer ducked from Jesus’ strike and stabbed him, killing him.

Jesus’ horrible death alerted the survivors to the fact that the walkers weren’t walkers and that a new threat had just revealed itself. Without Jesus’ death, the group wouldn’t have known that they needed to be ready to fight a new group. Jesus also willingly stayed behind to fight the walkers so that the people he cared about could get away. Jesus was always a reluctant hero, but a hero nonetheless and his death saved his friends.
