27. Michonne Chooses Carl And Rick

Season 4, “After”

The attack on the prison left everyone stunned and scattered. After running The Governor through with her katana in a supremely satisfying moment for fans, Michonne was almost catatonic. She was functioning at pure survival level. She made herself two pet walkers again so that she would be safe amongst the herds and she just walked.

Aimlessly she wandered and she didn’t seem to know where she was. She saw a trail, but didn’t follow it. Michonne reached her breaking point and she had to decide whether to choose life and go look for Rick and Carl, knowing she might lose them someday or choose to go back out alone and not risk the pain of losing someone else that she loved.

For a few moments it looked like Michonne, pushed over the edge by the prison battle and the murder of Hershel, would go off alone. But she rallied and made a heroic choice to embrace life again. She fought her demons as well as that pocket herd of walkers. And then she went back to the trail and followed it to where Rick and Carl were holed up so that Rick could heal from the terrible beating he took during the prison attack.

Because Michonne chose to go after Rick and Carl she was able to develop a strong bond with Carl and with Judith and get to spend a few years with Rick, her soulmate. She also was able to have a son with Rick. None of that would have been possible if she hasn’t made a courageous choice long ago in season 4.
