25. Tara Tells Rick About Oceanside

Season 7, “Something They Need”

Tara made a huge discovery when she found Oceanside, but her promise to them that she wouldn’t reveal the existence of the settlement was a promise she took seriously. She had no intention of ever telling Rick or the others about Oceanside. Until she got back to Alexandria and found out that Denise was dead, along with Glenn and Abe, and found out about everything that The Saviors had done.

She probably would never have mentioned Oceanside to Rick if it wasn’t critically important that Alexandria come up with enough guns to satisfy Jadis and The Heapsters and get them to fight for Alexandria. But Tara knew that in order to beat The Saviors they had to have the help of The Heapsters and that meant finding guns.

When scavenging turned up only a few guns and no ammunition she had a very difficult choice to make. Betray Oceanside and reveal their location to Rick, who would go in and take their guns, or keep her promise and potentially lose more people that she loved and watch Alexandria be taken over by Negan and The Saviors.

In the end, Tara put her loyalty to Alexandria first and told Rick and Michonne about Oceanside. And she was an active part in the military style operation that Rick put into place to show Oceanside the damage that the Alexandrians could do to Oceanside if they didn’t give up their guns peacefully.

It was clear that Tara didn’t like having to make the decision to break her promise to Oceanside, but in the end it really was necessary. Tara did the heroic thing by breaking her promise in order to help her community stay alive and get justice for Glenn, Abe, and Denise.
