Possibilities

Troy’s family had been at Broke Jaw Ranch since the start of the apocalypse, so unless Althea started her journey on the West Coast and traveled East, it’s unlikely that we’ll see Troy in a flashback on one of her tapes from a point before Madison and her family were there.

It could be possible that Troy survived the hammer attack and made his way East on his own. His brother Jake talked about other settlements out there, so Troy would know where to go and how to survive long enough to make it. If that’s the case, then perhaps Troy and Al crossed paths somewhere between Southern California and Colorado, which is where some of the other communities were located. Then again, it’s hard to imagine Troy letting Al go with her SWAT van, so the idea that they crossed paths at all isn’t very likely.

Could Troy have made it all the way to Texas on his own? Maybe. Between a few working vehicles, it’s possible. Troy is the ultimate survivalist, so provided that his head injury wasn’t too bad he could have made it.

There’s also the possibility that Troy ran into Daniel, who took the troubled young man under his wing. Both men were injured at the dam, and they both have reason to find the Clark family. Maybe they’re working together.
