While details are being sorted out about the AMC movies based on The Walking Dead, it seems as though the films will air on television, not in theatres.

Season 9 of The Walking Dead found fans saying farewell to Rick Grimes in an emotional and powerful episode. While it isn’t the final goodbye for the patriarch of the Grimes family, it was still a difficult installment to get through without tearing up.

Thankfully, AMC announced there would be films coming based on the popular zombie survival drama franchise and some of those films will focus on Rick Grimes and what happened after he and Anne were whisked away in a helicopter.

One major question is where those films will be seen. Episodes of The Walking Dead have been seen in the theatres with a warm reception and it would make sense for these films to get a theatrical release.

However, in a recent installment of the TWD Mailbag, Johnny O’Dell was asked about the upcoming films and where they could be seen in a tweet from what on Twitter. O’Dell didn’t confirm anything but did double down on the original plan.

"“There are a lot of details that still have to be sorted out for the Rick Grimes movies, but for now the plan is to air the films on AMC.”"

It makes sense for AMC to keep the focus on building their network as well as their Premiere service with these movies. While much has been said about the live views of episodes of The Walking Dead recently, many sites forget about delayed views in addition to services like AMC Premiere, Fubo.tv, Sling, YouTube TV, and other streaming services which offer the show.

While it would be great to see the upcoming films based on The Walking Dead be on the big screen, having them on AMC and AMC Premiere would do just fine in reaching the intended audience for the projects. However, there is always time for plans to change regarding this topic.
