A flashback will explain scars on Daryl and Michonne on The Walking Dead

Daryl and Michonne both have X-shaped scars on their back which were revealed in season 9 of The Walking Dead and those will be explained in flashbacks.
There were a lot of curious things in The Walking Dead universe following a massive time jump in season 9. New problems, new relationships, and new ways of living were thrust upon fans with not a lot of explanation.
One of the most interesting developments in season 9 which hasn’t been explored is the X-shaped scars on the back of Michonne and Daryl. What they could mean and who did them are still a mystery to viewers, but not one that will leave fans waiting for long.
In a recent reply in the TWD Mailbag by Johnny O’Dell, it was confirmed once again that the story behind these marking on the bodies of the two popular characters will become clearer in the second half of the season.
A fan named Rebar “And yet, I smile” Grimes (@carrieWUTWUT) asked the question on Twitter: “should we prepare for any more time jumps im not sure im ready tbh”
Odell’s response was more than just a yes or no reply, offering some in-depth information about the upcoming time jump:
"“Yes, Michael Cudlitz and Angela Kang have both confirmed we’ll learn how Michonne and Daryl got their x-shaped scars, aka a flashback. Stay tuned.”"
A single flashback could answer a lot of questions fans have about season 9. It could show what the scars are, who made them, and what divided the communities to the point where Michonne and Maggie weren’t on speaking terms anymore.
Most fans are already looking ahead to The Whisperer War, but learning what happened in the past could shed a lot of light on why things are the way they are following the massive jump in time.
Do you have any theories about what happened to cause the scars on the backs of Michonne and Daryl (and possibly others)? And how closely do those wounds relate to the problems between The Hilltop and Alexandria during season 9 of The Walking Dead? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
