2. Family Trumps All

Sandra Bullock’s performance in Bird Box is worthy of an award. We see her as the reluctant pregnant woman in the beginning to the fierce mother at the end. She’s willing to sacrifice herself to save her kids, and that’s a theme that has been repeated many times over on The Walking Dead.

Carol and Michonne have all shown what that mama bear fierceness looks like. Whether it was Carol looking for Sophia or watching over Henry (we won’t get into Sam) or Michonne caring for Carl and Judith (and now RJ) while thinking of the son she lost, both of these women epitomize what it is to be willing to give up their lives for their kids.

Rick was the same, being extremely fierce and protective when his friends and family were in danger. His final act of blowing up the bridge was his attempt to protect his entire family.

In both stories, family plays a very important role and it represents the reason that people keep pushing forward in the face of great adversity.

1. Human Kindness Wins

At the end of Bird Box Mallory and the kids arrive at the compound only to find it’s a school for the blind. They are welcomed inside with open arms, and they will be safe.

Rick and Carl shared a vision for the future that revolved around helping people in need. Morgan shares that goal and is actively looking to help people on Fear the Walking Dead. Rick’s group certainly saw lots of kindness throughout the course of nine seasons. Not only was it Morgan’s kindness that saved Rick in the beginning, but Rick’s group saved countless people because they always tried to help when they could.

Terrible things happen in the apocalypse, which is full of unspeakable horror. But human kindness always has a way of shining through to save the day.
