The Whisperers are coming and a new teaser for The Walking Dead season 9B shows just how gruesome this villain really is.

The Walking Dead returns in just a little over a month and today fans got a new look at The Whisperers in a new teaser trailer that was released on Facebook.

The clip shows several figures that appear to be walkers shambling but one turns to the camera and is revealed to be one of The Whisperers. The mask this Whisperer is wearing is horrifying and it raises a lot of questions about how the survivors will be able to fight an enemy that can hide so well in plain sight.

From looking at these Whisperers it would be very difficult to identity that they are actually human. They move in the stilted way that walkers move and move their limbs in awkward ways that perfectly mimic the strange movement of the walkers. It would be almost impossible to spot a Whisperer in a herd of walkers.

The Whisperers are humans who wear masks made from the skins of walkers so that they can blend in among the walkers. They move through the herds and can direct the herds using them as an army with precision. They are led by Alpha, who has already appeared in another teaser, and Alpha’s second in command Beta who has practically superhuman size and strength. With Alpha’s cunning and Beta’s brutality the survivors may have finally met a villain that they can’t beat.

Commanding An Army Of Walkers

Using the walkers as weapons isn’t a new strategy. Rick and the others have often positioned the walkers and used them as weapons by controlling them with the use of sound or flashing lights and fire. The walkers respond to stimuli like noises and lights even though they have no cognition.

But what The Whisperers do is different. By spreading out and moving through the herds disguised as walkers themselves they can silently and precisely turn both individual walkers and huge herds exactly where they want them to go. They don’t need to keep their distance like the survivors do.

When the survivors use lights and sounds to position the walkers those cues can also be heard and seen by the people that the survivors want to use the walkers against, so when the community leaders use walkers as weapons anyone within sight or ear range knows that a herd of walkers is coming. The Whisperers can maneuver the walkers silently so that there is no notice that they are coming.

The community members are adept at fighting walkers by this point, which is about ten years into the apocalypse, but they have never faced a threat like this. The Whisperers are going to change the survival game for everyone when The Walking Dead returns on February 10th.
