A fair was mentioned a few times in season 9A and The Walking Dead fans will see the fair happen in season 9B.

The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang confirmed to EW that the fair will happen at the Kingdom in season 9B. For fans of the comics that’s an ominous sign due to a horrifying story arc with the Whisperers that took place around a fair. There were more than a few deaths that happened in conjunction with the fair in the comic, including some main characters.

But Kang gave no indication that the fair is anything other than a good thing for the communities. She said that the fair will be a chance for the communities to come together and to trade now that the long distances between the communities make it difficult for the groups of survivors to get together often. The fair could even help mend whatever went wrong between Alexandria and the other communities. It looks like the Kingdom could definitely use some new supplies judging by the condition it was in when Carol took Henry to the Hilltop.

When talking about the fair Angela Kang said:

"Yes, we are going to see the festival. That becomes a part of the story for the back half of the season. We really dove into the idea of what this festival is in a real way for our people. The origins of these kinds of trade fairs were that people from far-flung communities would take a trek and trade useful goods because not every community had every single thing that they needed. It’s a place where people could learn new skills and pick up supplies that they needed. It’s also a chance for them to bond as different communities. In that context, we really get to see what each community is and how they’re even dealing with the very idea of this fair, because obviously, it’s been a point of some contention between the Kingdom and Alexandria. That’s a story that we see play out over the course of the back half."

So on the surface it seems like the fair is going to be a positive thing for the communities, but this is The Walking Dead after all so there may be much more to the story than Kang is letting on. With the Whisperers lurking no one is really safe, and the fair might just be a chance for the Whisperers to make a show of force that the survivors won’t soon forget.

The Whisperers Are A Game Changer

When it comes to villains on The Walking Dead the Whisperers are a real game changer. Never before have the survivors dealt with such a lethal and large group. Hopefully the fair will go off without a hitch and there won’t be an major deaths related to the fair but considering that no one is safe on this show fans shouldn’t count on the fair being as happy or as peaceful as it sounds. When The Walking Dead returns on February 10 it will begin an entirely new era for the show and if the show sticks close to the comic arc it’s going to be a very bloody one.
