Danai Gurira’s Black Panther continues its history-making run as it takes home the top prize at the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards show.

Black Panther took home the biggest award of the night at the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards on January 27 and The Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira was there to take in all of the excitement. The movie took home the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, a huge achievement for a comic book movie. Next stop: The Oscars.

Marvel’s Black Panther movie grossed over $700 million in theaters, putting it at the top of the 2018 box office charts. After the movie shattered box office records it broke new records by becoming the first comic book movie to earn best picture nominations at the Golden Globes and Academy Awards. The Outstanding Performance by a Cast win at the SAG Awards, along with a win for the movie’s stunt ensemble, is the kind of momentum studios like to see heading into the Oscars.

The Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira has been riding the wave of success. Not only does she appear in the top cable show, but her role in Black Panther has made her a break out movie star as well. Gurira appeared with the Black Panther cast on stage for the win in Sunday’s ceremony, and she’s sure to be at the Oscars on February 24.

Marvel already has a sequel to Black Panther planned, which could pose some big challenges for Gurira’s filming schedule with The Walking Dead, especially if Black Panther’s Okoye has a larger role in the sequel. AMC has already indicated a willingness to work with Gurira to make sure she can continue with The Walking Dead and Marvel, and that says a lot about how important she is to both franchises.
