Rick and Carl Grimes kept the group together with their strong leadership. The father and son duo prevented challenges that loom today in season 9 of The Walking Dead.

Carl and Rick are greatly missed as we turn a new chapter in the journey of The Walking Dead. What made Carl and Rick so special was the fact that they kept everything together in their own way. They contributed leadership, swift decisions, and unique ability to be game changers helping their fellow survivors.

Carl became a visionary, which even after his death changed everything for The Walking Dead forever. As he got older, he began to believe in something so much bigger than any of them. Carl saw something more than just fighting to survive against the dead and other people as everyday living.

Carl’s death changed everything for The Walking Dead universe because we knew that even someone as young and sharp as Carl wasn’t safe from a sad demise. Since Carl’s death, things began to fall apart slowly.

Rick was feeling the effects of Carl not being there and his demeanor was nowhere near the same as before with Carl by his side. Rick has never been the one to be tired of fighting, but Rick took on a similar role that he had back in the prison under the advisement of Hershel.

The change of role made Rick different in some ways, but he still was willing to fight if necessary. Rick wasn’t on the defensive on a full-time basis, and he embraced organizing the community and bringing the other communities together.

Rick was a strategist, which is why things with Michonne and Daryl grow more interesting. The only other master strategist is Carol who has saved them numerous times. Rick put together plans and they generally followed it, sometimes it worked, other times Rick had to improvise with close calls.

Rick and Carl collectively made decisions that needed to be made. Carl accepted Michonne, Gabriel, and Siddiq. Rick has made calls for strategy with all they been against and overall teamwork. This presents a great challenge moving forward without either of them there to be leaders collectively.

The snowball effect of losing Rick and Carl is too much for the survivors and we have seen everything build up community-wise but fall apart socially. The advancement came with a price of relationships between the strongest communities.

We saw late season 9 how it seems the relations between the communities were at an all-time low, and it is a sharp contrast with how things were with Rick and Carl there on a full-time basis. The survivors seem to be the most divided since the times they were separated after a walker invasion or fighting other people to survive.
