The Walking Dead has been renewed for season 10 and the Whisperers will continue to be a threat

While no one really expected The Walking Dead not to receive a renewal for season 10, today showrunner Angela Kang confirmed on social media that season 10 of The Walking Dead is happening.

Based on the social media post, it looks like the Whisperers will continue to be a threat in the 10th season. If the show follows the comic the Whisperers will have a good-sized arc and the survivors will have to push themselves to new limits in order to deal with the threat that they present.

The Walking Dead has already been pushing the Whisperers arc hard with lots of teasers and hints about this terrifying new threat so it’s exciting to see that the show is going to continue to explore the new world of the apocalypse and the new threats that it holds now that the survivors are about a decade into the apocalypse. All the vestiges of the old world are gone now and they are heading into uncharted territory trying to make a new civilization and determine what the best path forward is.

Some people predicted that The Walking Dead wouldn’t survive the departure of Andrew Lincoln and the end of the original survival story focused on Rick and Carl Grimes. But even though that story is over the Grimes’ family legacy lives on with Judith, Michonne, and Rick and Michonne’s son RJ. There’s still a lot of story left to tell and The Walking Dead is going to dig deep into redefining humanity, survival, and the bonds the survivors have forged throughout the first nine seasons.

Breaking New Ground In Genre TV

It’s quite an achievement for a niche show like The Walking Dead to make it to ten seasons. The only genre show that can rival The Walking Dead in popularity, Game of Thrones, is wrapping up after the conclusion of the long awaited season 8. And historically the longest running genre show was Stargate SG-1 which ran for a full ten seasons without a break.

Other popular genre franchise like Doctor Who and Star Trek have taken long breaks between reboots and continuations and have built franchises on spinoffs and films that take place within the same universe. The Walking Dead is one of the only genre shows in history to achieve ten full continuous seasons. And while live views have dropped a little over the years it still is millions of views ahead of any other genre show and was recently named the most in-demand show in the world.

The original show won’t be the only The Walking Dead property on the air. AMC is planning a huge expansion of the universe and has TV films and other spinoffs in the works as well continuing the Fear The Walking Dead spinoff. Fear  is currently filming it’s 5th season so it’s possible that AMC will have two shows in The Walking Dead universe hit the 10 season milestone.

The Walking Dead season 9 continues on February 10th when 9B kicks off and the threat of the Whisperers becomes very real for the survivors.
