The Walking Dead returns for the second half of season 9 with “Adaptation.” The Whisperers have arrived. Here’s your recap of this all-new episode.

We begin where we left off, in the foggy cemetery. There are bodies everywhere. Jesus is there. There are walkers on the ground, but it’s clear by looking at some of them that they weren’t really walkers, rather they were people with skin masks on. Someone says “die now” as the mysterious walker people surround Michonne, Magna, Yumiko, Daryl, Aaron and Eugene. Dog is there, too. Aaron stabs Jesus in the head while Michonne covers the group so that they can get away. They close the gate behind them, but gates are no match for real people.

Roll the credits, here we go.

(Note that Tom Payne is still listed in the credits)

The prison cell in Alexandria is empty and Negan is trying to figure out if this is a trap or if he really is free. When he sees that the town is sleeping, he realizes that this is real and he smiles. The first thing he does is pick some tomatoes, stopping to eat one. Then he grabs a shovel and goes to Michonne’s house.

Upstairs he finds that Judith’s room is empty. He spots a picture she drew of their family and it gives them pause, but he takes her compass anyway.

Outside we see that he has new clothes on, and he makes his way to the fence. That’s when Judith finds him. She’s in her pajamas with her gun pointed at him. She thought he was smarter than this, but she will shoot him. He tells her that they can part ways and never see each other again, but she’s not agreeable to that. He tells her about how her mom and dad locked him up to prove everything could change, and it did. He calls Alexandria a wonderland, but not for him. Judith says she has to follow the rules her mom made, but he reminds her that they have their chats that are against Michonne’s rules. He says she knows him better than anyone has in a long time. He promises not to hurt anyone, but he has to go. She lowers her gun. “Thank you,” he says. She asks if he was in her room. He holds up the compass, and she says it will help him find his way. And she’ll shoot if she sees him again. He agrees with that.
