In a recent interview newcomer Cassady McClincy offers some insights about Lydia and her mother Alpha, the newest villain on The Walking Dead.

For The Walking Dead fans who read the comics Lydia is an iconic character that needs no introduction. But for fans of the show that aren’t familiar with the comic Lydia’s first introduction in The Walking Dead 909 didn’t show her in such a great light. Lydia was captured and put in prison at the Hilltop where Daryl and Michonne tried to find out more about the Whisperers from her.

But Lydia wouldn’t answer their questions and told several different stories, making it unclear which was the truth or if any of them were the truth. Despite the fact that Lydia is clearly a threat fans took to the character right away thanks in large part to the way that Cassady brought this frightened, vulnerable, but still cunning teenager to life.

In a recent Q&A actress Cassady McClincy talked about Lydia’s character, her relationship with her mother, and what she’s most excited about when it comes the Whisperers’ storyline.  She said that she’s been a fan of the show for a long time so joining the cast was exciting. And she also commented, as many new actors do, about how welcoming and friendly the other actors were. Interestingly when she was asked about the interrogation scenes where Daryl is interrogating Lydia she said:

"“Those were some of my favorite scenes to shoot. Even though Lydia is a scared and conflicted teenage girl, she also has a strong and possibly manipulative survival instinct ingrained in her from her mother. I think she’ll do whatever it takes to protect herself. On The Walking Dead, things are always more complex than what they seem. [Laughs]”"

Does that mean that Lydia is lying to protect her mother or is she lying to protect herself? It seems like the relationship between Lydia and her mother Alpha will be complicated.

The Whispers Will Change The Survival Game For The Survivors

When asked if she was looking forward to seeing how the Whisperers affect the survivors Cassady said:

"“Yeah! I think they bring a whole new level of fear and unpredictability to the show. Alpha is really a genius given how she’s led them to adopt animalistic forms of camouflage and mimicry in order to make sure that the group survives and evolves.”"

There are many fans who are excited to see how the survivors figure out the nature of the Whisperers threat and how to deal with it. The Whisperers are incredibly dangerous because of their ability to mimic walkers and their ability to herd the walkers and use them as a giant undead army.  More of Lydia’s story and Alpha’s will be revealed in The Walking Dead 910 “Omega” this Sunday.
