This week’s episode of The Walking Dead takes us back to the beginning for a family trying to survive the apocalypse, but all is not what it seems. Here’s your recap of “Omega.”

“Omega” begins in the past. It’s very early in the apocalypse and a group of refugees has taken shelter in a building in Baltimore. The radio still works and it’s broadcasting an emergency recording. It’s Day 23 according to a running calendar.

A man named Frank comes to his wife and daughter and says he’s going crazy being holed up for 23 days. His wife tells him to calm down in front of their daughter. He apologizes to little Lydia and her mother starts signing “Lydia” while she traces her name, which is tattooed on her mother’s arm.

In the present, a much older Lydia tells Henry the story and says that she’s not sure why she’s telling him the story. Henry doesn’t mind listening, but he feels the need to let her know that walking around wearing dead people isn’t the most appealing idea. Daryl listens outside as Lydia says that this place is going to fall like every other place, because walls don’t work.

She says that his dad is being a jerk but Henry clears it up: Daryl’s not his dad, and he doesn’t even want to be there. He’s only there as a favor to Henry’s mother. Henry asks about Lydia’s dad and she has a memory of Frank falling back against a wall with blood coming out of his mouth. Lydia says he was a stupid man and her mom is the one who kept her safe, just like Henry’s mom, adding “You don’t mess with her, either.”

The search party is out looking for Alden and Luke. Tara leads the way while Connie and Yumiko point out a group of walkers. They’re not sure if they’re walkers or the other people, and Yumiko advises everyone to watch their hands for clues. It turns out they’re walkers (Tara notes the “funky walk” and lack of weapons) and they’re eating Luke and Alden’s horses. Tara orders everyone to look for tracks while Connie and Kelly point out that the horses were cut open before their died, meaning someone killed them. Tara says the woods aren’t safe anymore, and they should go back and make a plan to figure out how to rescue their friends.

Henry offers his egg to Lydia, who tells him that he doesn’t have to take care of her. She doesn’t understand why he’s being nice to her, and he explains that when he and his brother and father were originally found they were pretty “messed up.” He doesn’t get why she won’t accept the food, but she knows he won’t understand.
