Colman Domingo film ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ wins big at Spirit Awards
Awards season may be winding down but Colman Domingo and the cast of If Beale Street Could Talk nabbed Best Feature at the Spirit Awards.
If Beale Street Could Talk went home with the Best Feature award at the 2019 Spirit Awards, just one night ahead of the 91st Academy Awards ceremony. The movie, featuring Fear the Walking Dead star Colman Domingo, also landed two other awards the event.
Given that If Beale Street Could Talk was snubbed in the Best Picture category at the Oscars, landing the Best Feature trophy at the Spirit Awards the night before the Oscars is a big deal. Also receiving Spirit Awards are Regina King (Best Supporting Female) and Barry Jenkins (Best Director). King also took home Best Supporting Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture at the 2019 Golden Globes earlier this year.
The Film Independent Spirit Awards ceremony took place on a beach in Santa Monica, making it by far the coolest awards destination of the season. (Thankfully the weather took a turn for the better after parts of Los Angeles received a dusting of snow late last week, otherwise “coolest” would have an entirely different meaning)
With the Academy Awards ballots already tabulated, the Spirit Awards won’t have any impact on Oscars voting, however If Beale Street Could Talk was not nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars so coming away with Best Feature at the Spirit Awards is a big deal for the film, which has already received multiple awards and nominations on the award circuit.
Keep an eye on the Oscars on Sunday night, though, because If Beale Street Could Talk is nominated for three awards including Best Supporting Actress (Regina King), Best Original Music Score (Nicholas Britell) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Barry Jenkins).
You can catch the talented Colman Domingo on Fear the Walking Dead when the show returns for season 5 later this year.
