While The Walking Dead is a TV show, nothing in it is especially impossible. If it’s possible in a zombie apocalypse, it’s something you should prepare for.

At first glance, this might seem an odd choice for this week’s Survival Rule Of The Week, considering how much of this week’s episode of The Walking Dead focused on the idea of living with things we don’t like, but, there was one thing that Ezekiel kept saying in this week’s episode that spoke to me: “Any eventuality”.

Why did that speak to me more than the more obvious theme of living with things we don’t like? Simple, because, if you prepare for any eventuality, you’re also preparing for things you won’t enjoy having to live with.

To begin this idea of preparing for any eventuality, there’s no better place to start than the beginning of the zombie apocalypse.

If you’re serious about preparing, you have to start looking at everywhere you go and ask yourself: “If, suddenly, there were zombies…what would I do?”

Preparing for this can be as simple as where you sit at the movie theater, where you park at the mall…how you park, etc. It doesn’t need to be complicated, just think of all the places you might go, and how you might get out of them. That’s a good place to start.

The next thing you need to look at: if you want to prepare for anything, is your stuff. What do you have? What’s it for? Can you use it for something else?

Once you start thinking about a zombie apocalypse, suddenly, things that you might have had no use for before one become a lot more valuable. Look at this week’s Walking Dead, for example: The Kingdom used an old 80’s boombox to draw away a bunch of walkers. Even things you think might be worthless, like rubbish, might actually be really useful in a zombie apocalypse, where resources and materials will become tougher to come by.

Of course, we can’t ignore the elephant in the room: Preparing for any eventuality means, you’re also going to have to prepare for things you may not want to face, and things you may not want to do.

What things you may not want to face? How about death. I don’t know (Nor would I care to know) anybody who revels in the idea of people they care about dying, but, frankly, if you want to be ready, it’s something you’re going to need to plan ahead for. You need to know it can happen, and you need to know you’re ready if it does.

As for those things you won’t like doing, I’ll leave what those things are to your imagination, but, what I can say is that you need to imagine the worst things you may have to do to survive and ask yourself if you can live with them.

Some of them you may not be able to, and I wouldn’t advocate things like cannibalism, but, some of those things you can’t live with doing, well…you may have to learn to.

The key to surviving a zombie apocalypse is preparing for it. To be properly prepared for anything, especially a zombie apocalypse, you must consider any eventuality; Remember, we’re talking about zombies here, so, so long as a thing is possible, even if it’s remote, you have to be ready for it. It’s the thing you don’t prepare for that ends up getting you in the end.
