AMC confirms a second The Walking Dead spinoff is coming

AMC confirmed that Fear The Walking Dead won’t be the only spinoff of The Walking Dead as the universe continues to expand.
The Walking Dead is going to add a second spinoff to the post-apocalypse world created by the original show. According to The Wrap AMC’s chief operating officer confirmed that a third The Walking Dead series is in the early stages of development. He said that:
"“We’re not yet at a stage where we’ll be announcing its plans to premiere. But we have hired creative people that have pitched story outlines. We feel very good about the development of that series.”"
Neither The Walking Dead or the first spinoff Fear The Walking Dead are showing any signs of slowing down. The addition of Magna and her group to the existing cast open up new possibilities for the original show and the Whisperers story arc is the strongest that the show has done in awhile. However, there is some speculation from fans that the original show could end after Season 10 and shift focus to the spinoffs and the TV movies that are also in development.
With star Danai Gurira departing the original series in season 10, reportedly to join Andrew Lincoln in the TV films, as well as the departure of Lauren Cohan the flagship show has seen some changes after ten seasons. Stars Melissa McBride and Norman Reedus are signed to three years deals to appear in The Walking Dead universe and that means their characters could crossover into the new spinoff the way that Morgan Jones and Dwight have crossed over to Fear The Walking Dead.
A New World For The New Walking Dead?
There are still many unique and interesting apocalypse stories to tell so a second spinoff could be a great companion to the existing The Walking Dead universe shows. Fear The Walking Dead started right as the outbreak began, similar to the original The Walking Dead so it will be interesting to see if the second spinoff also starts off at the beginning. From a storytelling perspective the story is more cohesive when it follows a linear line from the original outbreak.
However, since the soft reboot in season 4 Fear The Walking Dead has adopted a multiple point of view storyline that jumps around and that does add a lot to the story. It might be interesting for a spinoff series to jump right into an existing storyline and take off from there instead of going back to the beginning.
It also would be interesting to see how the outbreak affected other areas of the world, which is something that hasn’t really been addressed since season 1 when the survivors found out from Dr. Jenner at the CDC that the outbreak was global and that other countries had fallen as well.
Prequels
Another option would be for a spinoff series to focus on a character or group of characters that fans already know. It would be a lot of fun to see the origin stories of some of our favorite villains. A limited series about how Negan found the Saviors and how he came to power would be interesting. Or the Governor’s backstory in a limited series would also be interesting. Personally I would love to see The Walking Dead prequels done in an American Horror Story style serial where each season follows a different villain or group and tells their story up until the point of meeting the original survivor group.
