Beta arrived on The Walking Dead last night, Daryl struck the first blow against The Whisperers, and TWD fans nearly broke Twitter with their feelings about it all.

Season 9 episode 12 of The Walking Dead set the pace for the rest of the season by increasing the intensity that has been building since the departure of Rick Grimes and the six-year time jump. The last few episodes of season 9B look like they’re going to be setting up the highly anticipated Whisperer War for season 10.

Last night brought the arrival of Ryan Hurst playing Beta, Alpha’s second in command. Fans have been just as excited to meet Beta as they were to meet Alpha and Ryan Hurst exceeded expectations just as Samantha Morton did in bringing Alpha to life.

For most of last night, the top trends on Twitter were The Walking Dead related with hashtags Alpha, Beta, The Walking Dead, and Whisperers. Alpha’s brutal show of power was terrifying and showed that she will do whatever it takes to stay in control of her “pack”. Later in the episode, she even threatened to kill her daughter Lydia if Lydia didn’t kill Henry.

But Daryl and Connie saved the day by leading a herd of walkers right into the Whisperer pack in the middle of the night. Even though many Whisperers were killed by walkers there is still a huge “pack” left and the Hilltop has basically just fired the opening salvo of the Whisperer War. Daryl and Connie rescued Henry and Lydia went with them which is definitely not going to sit well with Alpha. “Guardians” was full of drama and gore and was one of the best episodes of the season. Fans had a lot of thoughts about it:
