5. Face/Off

Seeing people walking around in masks made from the undead is pretty disturbing, but there is quite a bit more that goes into creating the garb that the Whisperers use to walk around among the zombies.

This is a case where not seeing how the sausage is made would have been just fine. Still, The Walking Dead took this opportunity to show Beta removing a walker’s face with a knife, showing how getting the skin off the nose is a bit of a challenge.

When the mask didn’t even get cleaned on the inside before going on a pike to dry out, the question of what the texture and smell inside the mask are like. Lydia mentioned the lack of Whisperer odor when at the Hilltop, and it can only be imagined what the putrid smell is like.

Major credit goes to the special effects team for creating the walker as well as Ryan Hurst for his excellent work as Beta on the scene to add to the disturbing imagery. Considering how the Whisperers work, this probably won’t be the last fans see of anything “disturbing” on the show.
